In 1890 David Jeptha Rose founded D. J. Rose and Son, one of the first firms to receive a general contracting license from the state of North Carolina.  Two early projects Mr. Rose completed of note were in Rocky Mount....  the original Bank of Rocky Mount building on Main Street completed 1918, and the original Electric Power Plant off Church Street, which was built at a time when less than 10% of North Carolina's population had access to electricity.

After Mr. Rose's death in 1940, his sons, I.W. and Dillon J. "Toby" Rose assumed operation of the company.

Spurred mainly by Toby Rose's leadership, D. J. Rose expanded its focus to include projects throughout the Eastern United States. Major clients of the period were Carolina Telephone and Telegraph, F. S. Royster, and the Atlantic Coastline Railroad.

Following Dillon J. Rose's untimely death in 1961, Dewey Weaver successfully led the company.  He soon attracted William. M. "Bill" Marshburn and Dillon W. Rose. In 1999, Dillon Rose, Jr. joined the current management team that is carrying D. J. Rose and Son into its second century of business.
